Attempting to run past many enemies will meet you with the fact that you can’t simply walk by them after they attack. You’ll be doing a lot of backtracking and there are quite a few enemies and, sometimes, they come in pairs. You can certainly try that in Tormented Souls, but as for doing it? I wouldn’t recommend it. Many survival games give you the option of simple avoidance. It also has a short cooldown after using it where you can’t do it again, so you can’t do anything crazy like double your invulnerability window. You do have to time things well, though, so don’t think you’ll save yourself by trying to spam it. If an enemy is about to attack, dodge and you’ll likely be able to avoid taking damage at all. This doesn’t just give her i-frames, but she basically becomes fully invincible as long as the animation is going. The dodge has i-framesĬaroline can do a backward dodge if you press the square/X button while aiming. But it can also be pretty frustrating at the same time. This game may seem intimidating at first blush, but it’s more lenient than you might imagine. How many supplies are there? How careful should I be? How often do I need to save? Can I screw myself over, requiring a restart? I’m going to break down everything I think a new Tormented Souls player should be aware of before starting their game with these beginner tips. With indie games, there are always compromises that have to be made to launch a title, and I think Dual Effect struck the best balance it could here.Whenever you’re doing your first run of a survival horror game, there are certain unknowns that will temper your playstyle. The biggest issues with Tormented Souls seem like they stem more from a problem with budget more than the devs’ ability. Exploring Winterlake Hospital channeled all those feelings of dread and loneliness that made those games special and proves that the format still works. I’ve wanted a new Silent Hill (or classic Resident Evil) game for years, but I’d trade all the drama and disappointment for a fantastic spiritual successor like this any day. Tormented Souls is the successor to classic survival horror. I’ll always say there is room in any genre for another solid entry, and that’s what you get here - a great survival horror game built with intentional classic/retro design. This game does not try to advance the genre it doesn’t do anything particularly new or better than previous champions of the genre have, but for all that it does, it does it very well. This was the kind of game that once I got the hang of it (I have not played many survival horror games at all) I became enthralled with playing and exploring every area and uncovering all the secrets and story material I could. Tormented Souls gets way more right than not, and I came away from it very impressed.
